Prioritizing Collaboration, Community in School Construction
This new facility features 10 collaborative learning spaces, a bright and open art studio, a fully equipped science lab, and a second cafeteria to serve the growing student body. Student commons, a porch pavilion, and shaded courtyard areas create spaces to connect, recharge, and engage, while faculty and staff benefit from integrated collaboration areas.
One of the Upper School’s defining architectural features is its monumental staircase—a centerpiece that doubles as a gathering place, performance backdrop, and outdoor classroom. Its central location on campus makes it a key part of both the school’s identity and daily rhythm.
Safety Considerations & Logistics
Constructing this facility during the academic year, with more than 650 students, faculty, and staff moving through campus each day, safety and disruption mitigation were non-negotiable. The project team developed a detailed safety and logistics plan, coordinating subcontractor access, managing deliveries, sequencing construction activity, and adapting to school events and daily routines.
Thanks to close coordination and proactive planning, the project was delivered more than three weeks ahead of schedule, allowing students and faculty to enjoy their new learning space in the current academic year—months earlier than expected.
This marks another successful collaboration with Hilton Head Christian Academy, and Choate is proud to continue supporting their mission of providing a high-quality, faith-based education in an inspiring and future-focused environment.

At the completion of the project, it was obvious that all elements of the construction including the workers, the vehicles and equipment, supplies, trash and debris, noise and other distractions were tailored around making sure the school was "first" and the "school day" ran as smoothly as possible.
