St. Johns Fire District Celebrates New Maintenance Facility

Choate Construction Company partners with St. Johns Fire District (SJFD) and Construction Dynamics, Inc to bring a fully-equipped Fire Equipment Maintenance facility to the community through a design-build delivery. Following the ribbon cutting ceremony on May 8^th, this single-story, pre-engineered building will further bolster the SJFD’s emergency services as they continue to protect and serve the local community.

“It’s an honor to work alongside the SJFD and Construction Dynamics to support our first responders and their life-saving efforts through this facility,” says Tim Heichelbech, Vice President and Division Manager for Choate’s Charleston office. “The dedication and teamwork on this project were instrumental to the successful delivery of this space.”

At 10,000 SF, the building contains three drive-through bays with 14’x14’ overhead doors, precisely positioned to maximize the property’s traffic and airflow. One of the bays features an overhead support beam that can support five tons via chain hoist trolley, with systems to accommodate oil changes on the SJFD’s emergency vehicles.

Additionally, the facility provides office and personnel space containing a locker room, showers, restrooms, a kitchen and dining area, IT room, training areas, and storage. The project team worked closely with Charleston County, the SC Department of Health and Environmental Control (DHEC), and the SC Department of Transportation (DOT) to ensure success in meeting zoning ordinances and codes needed for this facility.
