Providing Groceries for Our Neighbors in Need

The Choate stewardship team is back in action and supported our neighbors by hosting a canned food drive in support of Loaves & Fishes. Loaves & Fishes provides a week’s worth of nutritional groceries to individuals and families experiencing short-term crisis across Charlotte.

Due to COVID-19, Loaves & Fishes’ demand has tripled, going from feeding 1,100 people a week to over 3,500 a week by the end of March. Since then, they have closed their brick and mortar pantries and switched to a system of 20 mobile food pantries. This has allowed their staff to keep their jobs and stay safe while they support to those in need.

Those that have been referred to this program select groceries their family are most likely to eat and are paired with a Registered Dietitian to ensure enough food is available to create three meals a day for each family member. In 2019, Loaves & Fishes provided groceries to over 80,200 people; over 30% of were children.

After receiving hundreds of generous donations, our Choate team delivered 911 sanitized items to Loaves & Fishes, creating 760 meals! Congratulations to the team on the ability to uphold Choate’s stewardship core value even through these trying times!
