The American Heart Association’s (AHA) 2023 Lowcountry Heart Walk continued its record-breaking streak with the fourth year in a row of more than $1.1 million in funds raised through the event to support critical cardiovascular research and lifesaving science. Driven by their passion for “Building Up” their community, Choate Construction employee-owners surpassed last year’s efforts by raising more than $80,000 for the Heart Walk.

“It was incredible to see our community come out in full force to support The AHA’s mission of promoting a world of longer, healthier lives,” says Matt Brewer, President & CEO of Choate and Chair of this year’s Walk. “It’s been an honor to serve as chair of the 2022-2023 Lowcountry Heart Walk, and I am deeply moved by the support, tenacity, and determination that our Lowcountry community has shown to make this the best fundraising year yet.”

Charleston is one of just 30 +/- cities in the US that has raised more than $1 million through the Heart Walk.

In addition to their passion for the cause, Choate employee-owners have another personal connection to the Lowcountry Heart Walk this year. The 2023 Little Hearts Queen is Choate's very own Libba Palmer, daughter of Page and Chris Palmer. Chris is a Senior Project Manager who has been with Choate Charleston for more than 15 years.

“This cause is near and dear to our Choate family and to me personally, and it’s one that affects so many others in our industry as well,” says Brewer. “The work the AHA does to support research programs, educate individuals on their risk factors, and provide resources to help families is truly changing lives for the better.”

According to the AHA, one in 25 construction workers has cardiovascular disease. Additionally, nearly half of all construction workers do not get enough exercise, one in four is obese, one in four uses tobacco, and one in 25 has diabetes – all of which contribute to the risk of heart disease or stroke.
